Image credit: Ben Jennaer In December 2024, Louise Adkins and Benjamin Jenner completed a month-long residency at The Writers' Room, Florence Trust in London, where they developed a series of large-scale wall- and floor-based compositions in response to the studio space's architecture and layered histories. Throughout the process, they conceptualized these works as an ongoing dialogue - between one another, the materials, and the emergent forms within the studio. The resulting compositions represent an embodied language shaped by the actions and behaviors that defined and described their cohabitation of the room. The peculiar logic of this "slow conversation" challenged their preconceived notions of construction and composition, ultimately generating a site-responsive, "extralinguistic" vocabulary of forms.&#38;nbsp;About Louise Adkins &#38;amp; Ben Jenner.
Adkins and Jenner come together to ask questions of each other’s understanding of the limits of language and its interface with site, materiality and gesture. Their shared interest in scripting everyday exchanges between people, objects and the world has provided a platform to interrogate alternative routes to knowledge – how know-how can be written out of and into words. Such observations, they have discovered, require a type of time that is hard to come by. As a result, their time together orbits around strategies for implementing slowness in observation – a temporality that resonates with expanded forms of embodied drawing. Adkins and Jenner met whilst studying on the PhD program at the University of Leeds. In 2022 they founded Reading and Writing Bodies in Space (RWBS), a group of artists, writers, and researchers that convene around re-cognising the bodies relationship to knowledge through crip theory and disability studies. In spring 2024 RWBS facilitated Practice Notes #1 at The Project Space, University of Leeds. In autumn 2024 Adkins and Jenner completed Drawing as Slow Conversation at the Writers’ Room in London.

Manchester Contemporary (2022 and 2023), Studio 2, West Yorkshire.


Comprising large-scale Awagami paper scrolls, the works articulate performative moments collating cultural and cinematic references in the form of audio description, historical documents, and first-hand aural histories. 

For example, A pale yellow Volkswagen Beetle winds its way along a narrow ribbon of highway (The Shining, Kubrick 1980), or In space, an immense dull moon floats in blackness (2001: A Space Odyssey, Kubrick 2001).

Residencies included:
•Artist in Resident at The Tetley – working with West Yorkshire Archive Service – Leeds. •The Portico Library - Manchester.&#38;nbsp; •Extreme Views Artist in Resident &#38;nbsp;at Art Gene&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;working with South Lakes Archive Service - Cumbria

The resultant performances re-imagined the overlooked and uncatalogued, presenting a ficto-factual reading of the past. 

 
Accompanying all the &#38;nbsp;performances where publications&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;published by Wild Pansy press and the University of Leeds.

The publications have been exhibited at artist book fairs including PAGES: ARCHIVE, The Tetley Leeds, New Voices, Malmö KonsthallSweden, PRINTed#5 The Tetley Leeds, and Espai&#38;nbsp;Barra, Barcelona.&#38;nbsp;

Notes for a Performance - Re-Visioning a Smoky Meeting was the culmination of a six-month artist residency at the Tetley in Leeds.


Working with The Tetley’s (uncatalogued) corporate archive this work focused on performance art practice as a means of embodying heritage sites and historical collections. The performance challenged fixed historic chronology by acknowledging the impossibility of understanding historical collections, asserting that any reading of the past can only be understood in the present and embodied ‘now’.

Notes for a Performance – Weather Permitting was the culmination of a four-month ‘Extreme Views’ artist residency at Art Gene, South Lakes.


Working with the Furness Amateur Radio Society (FARS), Summits on the Airwaves (SOTA), and Barrow and South Lakes Archive Service Weather Permitting was concerned with heritage and landscape, mapping, topography, and contemporary understandings of nationhood.


Notes for a Performance – Weather Permitting, was performed and simultaneously transmitted (FARS and SOTA) from the summits of Black Combe, Hodbarrow Point, and Birkrigg Common on Sunday, 17th of March 2019.


Accompanying the performance was a publication published by Wild Pansy Press, University of Leeds, featuring the original performance script in text and braille format alongside a compendium of research and performance documentation.

Smoking Men is an ongoing collaborative project working with the photographer Jonathan Purcell. The photographic series uses smoke and smoking as a material trope of the past as a means to explore historic and contemporary representations of masculinity.
